We wondered why June is traditionally such a popular time of year worldwide to schedule a wedding. A quick online search about June Brides turned up some food for thought:
1. Historically, some married in the month of June to honor Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Getting hitched on this month means blessings and prosperity for the couple.
2. Brides married in June were likely to give birth to a first child in spring (also thought to bring good luck) and recover in time for the fall harvest.
3. (My favorite): Brides in the 15th century chose to marry in June because it coincided with their “annual bath” thus ensuring a relatively sweet-smelling honeymoon.
4. Today, a June wedding usually allows for nicer weather, an abundance of flower blooms, and the ability to host the event in outdoor venues.
Centuries later, June has remained the most popular month to wed. As they sing in MGM’s 1954 Academy Award-winning musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers:
“Oh, they say when you marry in June, you’re a bride all your life.”
