For the months of November and December, Carry Out Cafe & Catering’s gallery is showcasing professional artist Sharon Bignell’s realistic oil paintings of florals, landscapes, and seascapes. The public is invited to meet the artist, see the artwork and enjoy light refreshments at a special reception on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 2-4 p.m. at the cafe at 155 State Street in Newburyport. All of the art is for sale, perfect for holiday gift-giving.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Bignell excelled in art in school and has always enjoyed all forms of art from designing and making clothing to a career as a professional hairstylist, which allowed her to sculpt, color and paint hair. Now that her children are grown and her work schedule is more open, the Newburyport resident has returned to her longtime passion of painting. Her subjects include animal, landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and flowers. She thrives on detail and realism, using vibrant color in her work.

Bignell is now expanding her artistic subjects to a global focus, completing works depicting a glacier in Jasper, Alberta, a landscape of Antioch, Turkey, and mountain cottages in Switzerland. She also paints still lifes, figurative portraits of people and pets, and takes on special commissions for her clients. “Art is my passion and I want to share it. I want to convey happiness and make people smile,” she said. “The realism of my paintings is captured by blending the oil paints into a creamy texture, which makes the subjects appear larger than life.”

Largely self-taught, Bignell has studied with local artists Pat Lutz and Teri Eramo. More recently, she attended classes at the Academy of Realist Art in Boston with Philadelphia painter Carlo Russo. Her work has appeared in several juried exhibitions including the Newburyport Art Association and a solo exhibition of her floral paintings at the Firehouse Center for the Arts.

“Pursuing my art is a dream come true and my way to share the beauty of nature. I can only hope my paintings provide viewers with visions of delight,” Bignell said.

The paintings on display at Carry Out Cafe are available for purchase. Please contact Julie Cook at [email protected] or email Sharon Bignell at [email protected].
