“Brilliant Flow,” a new solo exhibition of alcohol ink paintings and handmade jewelry by local artist Liz Filipancic, is on display at Carry Out Cafe & Catering in Newburyport, MA, through mid-September. A free Artist Reception will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Carry Out Cafe. The public is invited to meet the artist, see the exhibition, and enjoy appetizers and beverages.
“Liz’s art is so bright and evocative – it just makes you happy,” said Paula Simpson, owner of Carry Out Cafe & Catering. “Viewers can use their imagination, seeing different elements in the pops of color that flow throughout her work.”
Ms. Filipancic began painting later in life. She credits her daughter with inspiring her to pursue art. “My daughter participated in a watercolor class taught by Joan Gessner of Joan Gessner Studios in Amesbury. I used to say to her that I would love to learn to paint as well. Joan always responded, ‘When you are ready, Liz, when you are ready.’ Five years later, my husband and I gave each other watercolor classes as Christmas gifts, and the love of painting exploded from there.”
Drawn to nature and the beauties of the earth, Ms. Filipancic notes that her art evolved from realistic painting to more expressionistic treatments of subjects like landscapes, flowers, fruits and vegetables. She enjoys experimenting with different mediums, colors, and sizes. In addition to her paintings, some of her jewelry is also on display at the Cafe. More jewelry will be on hand and available for purchase during the Sept. 15th Artist Reception.
“This series is a great adventure for me. I am excited by a new medium: Alcohol Ink on a synthetic paper called Yupo. The unpredictable reactions of the inks and their flow are inspiring. The paints work for me, rather than me working the paints,” said Ms. Filipancic. In addition to her solo exhibition at Carry Out Cafe, she will also have a booth at Art on the Bartlett Mall during Yankee Homecoming.
