HAVE FUN & RAISE MONEY FOR MRFRS AT THE STRUT FOR STRAYS MAY 20th!
This annual fundraising event and walk will be held on Sunday, May 20th at the Bartlet Mall in Newburyport. There will be live music, great food, fun vendor booths, and of course, the walk! Click here to download a walk sign-up brochure — or visit http://www.firstgiving.com/mrfrs to sign up today!

Carry Out Cafe & Catering is a supporter of this event & we aren’t pussyfooting around. We are planning to rock the route with our own compilation of Cat Tracks. (Some of these ideas are courtesy of Robert of the Radish on the Yahoo Music Blog and others spring from Catster.com.)

A search on Rhapsody, Pandora, iTunes, Amazon or other music sites will help you find these Top Feline-themed Songs to make your own mix-tape. Stray Cat Strut by the Stray Cats and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats Soundtrack are obvious choices. But maybe you should consider these other options, from pop, rock, country, rap, jazz and Looney Tunes:

ARTIST BIO Lauryn Welch

Lauryn Welch is a painter and mail artist from Peterborough, New Hampshire. She studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, and is currently taking some time on her own to develop her projects on color and pattern recognition. Her work has a neurotic life of its own, oscillating between irreverent humor and compulsive repetition. She has been featured at the Sharon Arts Gallery, as well as TEDxWoods Hole presented by Dr. Roger Hanlon. For more about Lauryn and her work, visit http://cargocollective.com/laurynwelch

ARTIST BIO Chuck Welch

Chuck Welch is a writer, papermaker, musician, and mail artist who pioneered the creation of the World Wide Web’s first virtual reality art museum, The Electronic Museum of Mail Art: www.actlab.utexas.edu/emma/ He and his daughter, Lauryn are members of Ray Johnson’s legendary New York Correspondence School of Art. Welch was among the first artists to write and publish books about mail art networking. He is widely known for linking the international mail art movement with the internet in 1991. Welch is particularly fond of creating artistamps and was among the first artists to be involved with the evolution of that new genre. His mailart pseudonym, CrackerJack Kid, was created in 1978 when he realized while eating a box of crackerjack candy and pulling out the free surprise, that mail art too was like receiving a surprise in every mailbox. He is a Fulbright recipient, and National Education Association Hilda Maehling Fellowship scholar. Welch’s artwork and books appear in leading museums and research collections around the world including the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art’s Library collection of artists’ books.

Today
By Billy Collins

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary’s cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.
of the Newburyport Salvation Army.
As noted in an earlier blog post, Paula regularly gives her time to help provide lunches each Wednesday and often donates to their fundraising programs. Meal Programs are offered on Wednesdays at 11:15 am (The S.A. Café Lunch) and Thursday, 5:00 pm (Friendship Table Dinner) at the center at 40 Water Street in Newburyport.

We are looking forward to the Salvation Army Volunteer Appreciation Dinner this Wednesday, April 25th, where so many locals will be honored for their community service. It’s nice to be recognized for volunteer efforts but that is not why we do it.
To quote Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

And the Salvation Army gives a lot to individuals and families in need. We believe that all people deserve to have their basic human needs met. By helping them get through the tough times, the Salvation Army helps them avoid eviction and avoid getting further into a financial crisis.

Assistance may be given in areas such as:
** Utility assistance through the Good Neighbor Energy Fund or FEMA
** Food packages including meat and cheese
** Rental/mortgage assistance
** Referrals and case management
** Counseling
** Budgeting
** Help with assistance forms
** Family Development Plan
** Life Lesson Classes

If you need help, please call to schedule an appointment with the Social Ministry Director. For more info, contact Lieutenants Jeffrey and Meghan Brunelle, Corps Officers at (978) 465-0883 or by email at JBrunelle@use.SalvationArmy.org

If you are interested in volunteering, there are a number of ways to give back. Not all of their needs revolve around Christmas and bell-ringing. Consider helping out by:
** Assisting with Food Drives
** Answering Phones
** Friendship Table-preparing, serving and clean-up
** Visiting area nursing homes on behalf of The Salvation Army
** Doing yard work or other projects around the facility
** Teaching a craft or your specialty to the Teen and/or Youth groups
** Playing piano for church service

Remember: No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.

Did you know?: (info reused courtesy of Wikipedia)

** Earth Day, held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s natural environment, is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

** The theme of 2012 Earth Day is “Mobilize the Earth.”

** The name and concept of Earth Day was allegedly pioneered by John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. Earth Day was first observed in San Francisco and other cities on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.

** A separate Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970.

** While this April 22 Earth Day was focused on the U.S., an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

** Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues.
